Plot

The Power with its appropriation of many of The Godfathers elements ends up as more of a garish retread than a ‘tribute’. While The Godfather was followed by two sequels, one can only hope that Mahesh Manjrekar’s uninspired film does not have any further installments.

Actors

  •    Vidyut Jammwal plays Devidas Thakur, the Singapore-returned youngest son of crime lord Kalidas Thakur (Mahesh), who wants nothing to do with the family business.

VIDYUTA JAMMWAL

  •    He is in love with Parveen aka Pari (Shruti Haasan), the daughter of his father’s close associate, Anwar (Zakir Hussain), and is set to marry her.
  •    Shaila is Devi’s scheming sister-in-law who resents the Thakurs’ proximity to Pari and Anwar. Her husband Ram is uncomfortable with her ways.
  •    Meanwhile, her ambitious brother Ranjit, who is married to Ram and Devi’s sister, simmers with bitterness because he feels slighted by the entire clan.

Storytelling

  •    Initially it appears that The Power may have something novel to offer with its promising prologue, the inter-community equations involved and a woman’s transformation from devoted daughter and girlfriend to revenge-seeking, gun-wielding gangster.

  •   But each time it hints at a path less trodden, it turns away from its own promise.
  •   Set against the backdrop of Mumbai underworld, Kalidas Thakur aka Dada (Mahesh Manjrekar) runs an organised crime business with the help of his trusted aid Anwar (Zakir Hussain), elder son Ramdas (Jishhu Sengupta) and Ramdas' brother-in-law (Prateik Babbar).
  • Soon, Kalidas' youngest son Devi Das Thakur (Vidyut Jammwal) returns from Singapore, and is all set to get hitched to his childhood sweetheart and Anwar's daughter Pari aka Parveen (Shruti Haasan).

  •     However, their marriage plans get thwarted when there is a failed assassination attempt on Kalidas and the finger of suspicion is pointed at Anwar. But in a twist, Anwar gets tricked to death, and Pari swears revenge on the Thakur family.
  •    On the other hand, Devi Das bound by ties of blood and heritage, is forced to take over the mantle from his father and gets involved in the inevitable cycle of violence, vendetta and power.

Direction

Mahesh Manjrekar's gangster film sounds ambitious on paper. Unfortunately, when it comes to the execution, the film misses the target because of the tedious screenplay.

One can smell the 'twists' beforehand; blame it on the lack of novel writing. While the bullets fly high, the script runs dry.

MAHESH MAJREKAR

If you expect this Vidyut Jammwal starrer to be a Vaastav, then be prepared to get disappointed! Manjrekar tries to make an action film with elements of drama, but struggles to reach the winning point.

Also, some of the dialogues in the film come across as tacky. A word of caution for those who cannot stomach graphic violent scenes- this movie has a couple of them.

Overall View

  •    Director has penned and directed this crime/revenge saga keeping – we are assuming – the underlying theme that hatred is never an answer in mind.

SHRUTI HASSAN
  •    The heart of the movie is in the right place but the manner in which the story has been laid out in front of its viewers is extremely uninspiring.
  •    First, considering it’s a feature film and not a web show, a huge amount of time is dedicated to hyping up the central theme, which, frankly, can be deemed unnecessary so much so that after a while even the high-octane action sequences and emotionally-charged scenes cannot keep you hooked. Secondly, in terms of acting, not everyone’s performed – while Vidyut holds his own as the calm.
  •    Shruti lacks the conviction of a bereaved daughter seeking vendetta from her wrongdoers. Sure, the actress exudes the simple-girl-charm effortlessly, but falls short in rendering believable expressions both in charged-up parts as well as physical confrontations.
